Possessive Suffixes

In this page we will learn about the Turkish genitive endings.

1) Word ending with a consonant
There are 4 alternatives;. ım, im, um, üm
if a word has a or ı as the last vowel ım..1
                   e or i as the last vowel im..2
                  o or u as the last vowel um..3
                  ö or ü as the last vowel üm..4
1. yaş - age
benim yaşım - my age
2. ev - house
benim evim - my house
3. sabun - soap
benim sabunum - my soap
4. göz - eye
benim gözüm - my eye

Another rule is that if the word ends with either one of these letters p ç t k, then these letters change into b c d ğ respectively.
But if only this word has more than one vowel.
kitap - book
benim kitabım - my book

araç - tool
benim aracım - my tool

kaset - cassette
benim kasedim - my cassette

tarak - comb
benim tarağım - my comb

If there is one vowel, there is no consonant change;
kek - cake
benim kekim - my cake

top - ball
benim topum - my ball

And the letter t has exceptions.
saat - watch
benim saatim - my watch

When you learn one line, it means you know all of them. Because only the vowel changes upon the last vowel of the word which I mentioned in the very beginning of this page.

and for the plural;
benim yaşlarım, senin yaşların, onun yaşları, bizim yaşlarımız, sizin yaşlarınız, onların yaşları
benim evlerim, senin evlerin, onun evleri, bizim evlerimiz, sizin evleriniz, onların evleri

When we have plural nouns, the last vowel is either e or a (ler or lar). So we have two possible alternatives. The possessive suffix can be either ım or im.
benim sabunlarım, senin sabunların, onun sabunları, bizim sabunlarımız, sizin sabunlarınız, onların sabunları
benim gözlerim, senin gözlerin, onun gözleri, bizim gözlerimiz, sizin gözleriniz, onların gözleri

2) Word ending with a vowel
For the vowels we apply the same rule, but this time as the word ends with a vowel, for the third persons we add -s as connection letter.

benim ayım, senin ayın, onun ayısı, bizim ayımız, sizin ayınız, onların ayısı
last letter e,i
elbise - dress
benim elbisem, senin elbisen, onun elbisesi, bizim elbisemiz, sizin elbiseniz, onların elbisesi
last letter o,u
kuyu - well
benim kuyum, senin kuyun, onun kuyusu, bizim kuyumuz, sizin kuyunuz, onların kuyusu
last letter ö,ü
ütü - iron
benim ütüm, senin ütün, onun ütüsü, bizim ütümüz, sizin ütünüz, onların ütüsü

And for the plurals there is no different rule that we apply. Because after we add -ler or - lar, it is a word that ending with a consonant. And again there are only two options ım and im.
araba - lar - ım
elbise - ler - im

Now we looked at the endings of the second words. What about the first words?
There are 4 options. ın in un ün. After a,ı -->ın, e,i -->in, o,u -->un,  ö,ü -->ün. And if the word ends with a vowel we add n, not y. When we use the genitive, the connection letter is n, otherwise it is always n.(except the two words ne/what and su/water, they take -y)
adam - man, şapka - hat
adamın şapkası - the man's hat

bebek - baby, el - hand
bebeğin eli  - the baby's hand

gazate - newspaper, renk - color
gazatenin rengi - the newspaper's color
