sahip olmak - to own

sahip olmak - to have, to own, to possess, to have ownership of
sahip - owner, someone/something who has

Whenwe have 'something', we basicly use the genitives and the word 'var/there is', but actually there is another way to say it which is sometimes really necessary to know in order to make sentences.

for example;

Güzel bir evim var. I have a nice house.
Güzel bir eve sahibim. I own a nice house. (p changes into b because of vowel harmony: http://www.learnturkisheasy.com/grammar/possessivesuffixes)

We usually use the fırst sentence to say that we have something but what if we need to say;

I have to save money to own/have a nicer house.
-->then we need to use a verb and say;
Güzel bir eve sahip olmak için, para biriktirmeliyim.

examples
Bu saçlara sahip olmak için her şeyi yapardım.
I would do anything to have this hair.

Sarı saçlarım var. I have blonde hair.
Sarı saçlara sahip olmak için... - in order to have blonde hair...

-->When 'sahip olmak' is used as a describer/adjective for a noun/word, we usually omit the word 'olmak'

İstanbul, Türkiye'nin en çok nüfusa sahip olan şehridir.
İstanbul is the most populous city of Turkey.
-->We could just say .. en çok nüfuslu şehridir. Isn't it familiar from somewhere?
Sarı saçlıyım. I have blonde hair. Sarı saçlarım var. Sarı saçlara sahibim.
It is one of the ways of telling what we have : the suffix -lı/-li/-lu/-lü

When you read the news or a book, it is more likely that you will see sahip olan/sahip.

-->There are some common uses of this verb that we should be aware of.

İş sahibi olmak : To have a job
Çocuk sahibi olmak : To have a kid

These are the two phrases that you can see more often and as you may have noticed sahip changed into sahibi.

iş sahibi : job owner, someone that has a  job
çocuk sahibi : kid owner, someone that has a kid

çocuk sahibi olmak için - in order to have a kid
iş sahibi olmak için - in order to have a job

*So, we can conclude that the Turkish verb 'sahip olmak' is the verb or a bit more formal way of telling what you or someone/something has.
